02 — How It Gets Done

Five steps.
No skipped ones.

01

Scrape

Every loose flake pulled by hand. Wire brushes on spindles. Nothing gets painted over.

Heat guns on stubborn alligatoring. Chemical stripper where layers are too thick to pull clean.

Crew member scraping deteriorated paint from porch balusters using wire brush and hand scraper tools
Step 01
02

Sand

80-grit to 120-grit. Orbital on flat boards. Hand-wrapped on profiles and corners.

Dust extraction on every pass. No shortcuts on the corners — that's where paint fails first.

Step 02
03

Repair

Rot filled with epoxy. Nail heads countersunk and puttied. Cracks caulked with 50-year sealant.

Bondo for surface repairs. Abatron LiquidWood for structural rot. We don't paint over problems.

Step 03
04

Prime

Oil-based primer on bare wood. Stain-blocking on water damage and tannin bleed.

Zinsser BIN shellac on knots and stains. Two coats on end grain. No flash-through on topcoat.

Step 04
05

Topcoat

Two coats minimum. Cut-in by brush, rolled flat sections. Wet edge maintained throughout.

Rot I'd been ignoring for two years. They filled it, painted it. You'd never know.

I've had two other crews quote this job. These guys were the only ones who actually scraped first.
